Pregnancy is a very special time for families and loved ones. Pregnancy and the creation of another life is a beautiful and miraculous process however, women can find themselves feeling aches and pains along with general discomforts related to their pregnancy. Chiropractic care during pregnancy can greatly help ease many of these discomforts.
During pregnancy, the increase in weight in the front of the pregnant woman’s body changes her balance and base of support. As she grows, more compressional forces are placed on her joints and ligaments, while her brain releases a hormone called “Relaxin”. This Relaxin hormone aids in relaxing the pregnant woman’s ligaments and joints, causing the ligaments that hold her joints together to loosen in preparation of delivery. As a result of this, her joints feel less stable and her muscles tighten and contract to provide more support.
There are many researched benefits to seeing a Chiropractor during pregnancy. During the first trimester Chiropractic care can help balance a pregnant woman’s spine and pelvis before the increase in weight gain. This can help prevent prenatal back and pelvis pain, as well as help her adapt to the many hormones that are continuously fluctuating during pregnancy which bring joint pain, fatigue, nausea and headaches. In the second trimester, proper alignment continues to help the pregnant woman keep a stable spine and pelvis so that she may remain active, sleep better and handle many other stressors from the environment. In addition to this, with the increased secretion of the Relaxin hormone during this trimester, Chiropractic care and exercise prescription helps address the muscle and ligament strains that arise throughout pregnancy. As the woman moves into the third trimester, specific Chiropractic techniques help with common pregnancy related aches and pains such as: Sciatica, Ligament Tension, Pubic pain and Dysfunction, Tailbone strain, Rib pain, Plantar Fasciitis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and much more. It is never to late to see a Chiropractor during your pregnancy, however, the earlier support will help decrease unwanted discomforts.
Webster Technique is a safe, natural and extremely gentle Chiropractic technique that is specific to Pregnant women. Dr. Larry Webster of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association founded the technique and it is a gentle, non-invasive procedure that helps restore balance in the woman’s pelvis to release tension that may be causing unwanted misalignments. Postnatal Chiropractic care is helpful to any mother as it helps the woman recover from both the pregnancy and the birth process. This helps her focus on the health and wellbeing of her new baby and enjoy all the new precious moments. After delivery, the woman’s ligaments begin to tighten and the joints start to realign. Seeing a Chiropractor in the first few weeks after delivery can help avoid misalignments and support optimal balance in her joints and ligaments as they tighten. All Chiropractic techniques can be modified to accommodate the new mom’s recovery whether she had a vaginal or cesarean birth. In addition to this, the Chiropractor can provide valuable advice on proper postnatal exercises and the proper ergonomics of nursing and carrying your newborn.
