Whether it’s from long hours at your desk, an intense workout, or the stress
of life, your muscles can hold onto tension. At Harmony Chiropractic & Wellness Clinic, we provide cupping therapy as a natural way to release muscle tension, support blood flow, and promote overall wellness.
Cupping is a time-honoured therapy with roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
It’s also used in modern chiropractic and manual therapy practices. While the tools
and techniques can vary, the goal is the same. To create gentle suction on the skin
that encourages circulation, eases muscle tightness, and supports your body’s natural
healing process.

What Is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping involves placing specialized cups on the skin to create suction. This suction
gently lifts the skin and underlying tissues, encouraging blood flow, easing muscle
tension, and promoting a sense of relaxation.

We offer two main styles of cupping at our clinic:

TCM Fire Cupping

Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, fire cupping uses heat to create suction inside
glass cups. A small flame briefly warms the air in the cup before it’s placed on the skin,
creating a gentle vacuum as the air cools. This method has been used for centuries to
support circulation, ease tension, and encourage the body’s natural balance.

Modern Cupping

In a chiropractic and manual therapy setting, cupping can also be performed using
plastic cups and a hand-held device that gently draws the air out. This allows your
practitioner to easily adjust the level of suction for comfort and precision. Modern
cupping can be particularly useful for targeting specific muscle areas, supporting
recovery after physical activity, or easing postural strain.

How Cupping Supports the Body

While cupping doesn’t treat medical conditions, many people seek it for its gentle,
restorative benefits, such as:

  • Encouraging healthy blood flow in muscles and tissues
  • Helping release areas of muscle tightness
  • Supporting relaxation and stress relief
  • Promoting mobility

It’s a non-invasive way to support your overall wellness and can be combined
with other therapies like chiropractic adjustments, massage, acupuncture, or
kinesiology.

What to Expect in a Session

During a cupping session, your practitioner will discuss your comfort preferences and
areas of focus. Cups may be left in place for several minutes or moved gently across
the skin for a massage-like effect. Most people describe the sensation as a comfortable
pulling or stretching — and many find it deeply relaxing.
You may notice temporary, circular marks where the cups were placed. These are not
bruises but a result of the gentle suction drawing blood toward the surface, and they
typically fade within a few days.

A Gentle Addition to Your Wellness Routine

Cupping therapy can be a soothing reset for your muscles and mind, especially during
busy or physically demanding times. Whether you’re curious about the traditional
warmth of TCM fire cupping or the adjustable comfort of modern cupping, our team can
