Infant Torticollis & How Chiropractic Can Help
You have a one-month-old baby at home and she’s having some difficulties breastfeeding on one side. Your newborn’s head appears to be tilted to one side and she struggles to turn in one direction. Every time she tries to latch on this certain side, she pulls back and appears to be in pain.
If this sounds familiar, your baby might have torticollis.
What is torticollis?
Torticollis, also known as wry neck, is characterized by a twisted or tilted neck and can result in pain. This condition can present in babies.
It can also present after a difficult birthing experience. While this condition does cause some babies pain, many don’t feel any discomfort from it.
It is most common among infants and toddlers under two years old, although it can also be acquired in adult life.
The good news is… we can help!
This issue is often associated with spinal misalignment, in the cervical spine. This is where a chiropractor can come in to help realign the joints and get the body communicating effectively.
A combination of gentle spinal manipulation and massage therapy can easily resolve the issue within a few treatments.
So you’re hesitant to bring your baby in for a chiropractic adjustment…
You might worry that chiropractic care will be too “aggressive” for your newborn or that they must undergo a painful adjustment before their torticollis will disappear. You can rest assured, however, that infant chiropractic care is extremely gentle and safe. Babies do not need much pressure on their joints for them to be successfully realigned. While some force can be necessary with adults at times, babies will always receive the luxury of a gentle touch.
Understand that Dr. Harmony Mir has a keen interest in treating infants with the utmost precision and care.
