Millions of people across the globe have had some sort of surgical work done on their knees or ankles.
Even more people avoid contacting their doctor about their knee or ankle pain because they don’t want to go through the surgery process. Too many people are suffering in silence. Fortunately, chiropractic care offers a non-invasive and drug-free alternative to surgery and medicine. Let’s talk about it.

What causes knee and ankle pain?

As you age, your chances of knee and ankle pain increase significantly. If pain in the knees or
ankles arises without injury, it is likely due to pressure caused by:
 weight gain
 a change in lifestyle, or
normal wear and tear with aging.

Because these joints are relatively small, drastic changes in weight or lifestyle can easily cause strain or stress.
You might be at risk of arthritis if you are experiencing tenderness, decreased ability to move, walk, or bear weight, and stiffness or swelling in the joint. These symptoms warrant a phone call to your doctor as soon as possible.

Ankle Injuries

The most common type of ankle injury is an ankle sprain.

This involves injury to the ligaments around the ankle—most commonly the anterior talofibular ligament.
It is recommended that you stay off of the affected foot for a few days for it to heal. Be careful when returning to weight-bearing activities as the pain can flare up again from a simple misstep.

Typically, chiropractors will not adjust a fresh injury. Instead, we perform modalities like ultrasound, ice, taping, and more, and give rehab exercises to speed healing. Oftentimes, people come to chiropractors with an old injury ready to try something new.

Knee Injuries

The knee is one of the most complex and convoluted joints in your body. It is supported by an important combination of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage.

Whenever you are walking, your knees are taking the brunt of your weight. This burden increases substantially whenever you run or jump.
With this in mind, it is no surprise that knee injuries are extremely common.

So, how can a chiropractor help with knee or ankle pain?

Chiropractic care offers a drug-free and non-invasive alternative to prescription medications or surgical solutions. Adjustments reduce joint restrictions or misalignments to decrease inflammation and improve function of both the affected joint and nervous system.

While chiropractors do focus on the spine, they are also trained in adjustments of the extremities. Ankle and knee joints can be moved back to their normal position, providing relief so you can return to your daily activities.

When dealing with the knees and ankles, chiropractic care can help to:

 speed up the healing process

 decrease inflammation

 improve range of motion

reduce the pain of shin splints and/or heel spurs, and

prevent other podiatric problems from evolving.

Relief after an adjustment can often be immediate. Your chiropractor will prescribe exercises along with nutritional advice to ensure long-term healing.
Other treatments, such as trigger point therapy, myofascial release modality, taping, and rehab may be recommended to help your recovery along.
