You’ve been diagnosed with a bulging disc by your doctor. What does that mean and how can you get pain relief for it? To better understand what this injury means for you, let’s talk about the anatomy of your spine.

Your spine is made up of a line of vertebrae, your sacrum, and your coccyx. In between the vertebrae in your spine are spinal discs, which are spongy in consistency and act as shock absorbers to prevent damage during body movement. There are two layers that make up each spinal disc, with the outer layer being made of collagen and proteins and the inner layer being gel-like.

What Makes a Bulging Disc Different from a Herniated Disc?

The tough outer layer of the spinal disc is called the annulus and the inner layer is called the nucleus. When a disc bulges, it protrudes outward but the outer layers of the annulus remain intact. This can still result in nerve compression, but it does not create a tear in the annulus. No tear happening in the disc makes this injury different from a herniated disc.

What Are the Symptoms of a Bulging Disc?

Some common symptoms of a bulging disc include:        A phone with the number 2 4 in it's center.

  • Weakness in the legs and feet
  • Back pain that worsens with movement
  • Back muscle spasms

What Can Cause a Bulging Disc?

Less inner layer (nucleus) in the disc causes it to become compressed. The inner layer does wear away over time, so a bulging disc can occur naturally with aging. However, a bulging disc can also happen due to an injury such as being injured in a car accident.

What Can a Chiropractor Do For a Bulging Disc?

If a patient has a bulging disc, a chiropractor can reduce the pain associated with it. In a visit with Dr. Harmony, she will look at your entire spine and let you know if there is a part of your spine that is putting stress on your bulging disc. Chiropractic adjustment helps to relieve pain and get patents back to their activities of daily life. It is important to seek treatment for a bulging disc because there is a potential for it to turn into a herniated disc, causing increased pain and discomfort.

If you think you have a bulging disc, chiropractic care can lessen the presence of symptoms without the use of drugs or surgery. Dr. Harmony Mir can help you to manage your symptoms. You can make an appointment with her by giving us a call at (250) 868-8086 or by visiting our online booking site https://harmonychiropracticclinic.janeapp.com .
