Back in 1895, “modern-day†chiropractic had its first adjustment. Ever since then, there’s been quite a bit of disbelief and controversy. Here are the top 10 myths that have been cracked (yes, pun intended):

  1. If you go once, you have to keep coming back

Everyone’s treatment plan is different. While some people need to go often, others go whenever needed. Having regular adjustments can be part of a healthy lifestyle but Dr. Mir is very good at judging how frequently you should to be treated. Of course, in the end it’s always your choice on when you need to come in; but you never know, you may never want to leave!

  1. Your bones are breaking!

The sound that you hear when your chiropractor is adjusting you is not your bones snapping. In fact, it’s caused when the gas in the small opening of your joints is released. It may sound scary, but you have to trust in your chiropractor. They have gone to University for 8-12 years so they know what they’re doing! There is always an explanation of why something made a certain noise.

  1. Your children should not be treated

Children are constantly growing and will have a few crashes or scrapes. That’s part of growing up after all! Checking their joints helps prevent any future problems. In the end, children will grow up having better nerve function and develop a healthy skeletal system if they have chiropractic care. And remember, the type and why they are treated is also much different than how an adult would be treated because they are just kids after all, as Dr. Mir says, “they have a clear & clean canvas…therefore they do not need much care to heal.â€

  1. It only works on back pain

Yes back pain is a major reason people will go to a chiropractor, but it’s not the only thing they are trained to treat! Headaches, neck pain or car crash injuries are also very common reasons. But think about all the other conditions people live with; for example, people will scoliosis, osteoarthritis, ligament sprains and Dr. Mir’s personal favorite…Temporal Mandibular Joint (TMJ) dysfunction. Everyone is able to benefit from this kind treatment in a different way!

  1. It’s painful to be adjusted

Nearly every patient that is adjusted will feel relief in some way. At the end of the treatment, they may feel slightly sore, but that’s just because your body’s bones and muscles have been moved to the correct alignment. After a few consistent appointments, your nervous system will learn that there is a better position and will have a continuing sense of ease with each adjustment. Also your tissues will be less tight, therefore less sore with every treatment. This is all a sign of good healing!

  1. You’ll get a stroke!

A big fear people have when having their necks adjusted is the myth that you will have a stroke if your neck is cracked. Shockingly, research shows that the chance of this happening is one in a million. Of course, if you have any concerns or questions about how this could be, Dr. Mir has the knowledge to explain this evidence and if she thinks a patient shouldn’t have their necks adjusted…. she simply won’t do it. If someone prefers to not have their necks manipulated, she has many alternative options to treat the joints in the neck which provide less impact with same relief and benefits!

  1. I can crack my back just as well

It’s always recommended to have a licensed Chiropractor perform the necessary adjustments to your joints because having the correct joint position is essential to achieving proper joint alignment. You could easily make whatever pain you’re having 10 times worse if you goof up! When you attempt this, you may hear the sound of a pop or crack and think you successfully adjusted yourself, however just because you made a cracking sound doesn’t mean the joint has been adjusted into proper alignment. In fact, more times than none the joint ends up getting adjusted further out of alignment when you self manipulate your own joints. A proper adjustment will restore the movement of the misaligned joint and improve function while making the relief last!

  1. I will be forced to get X-Rays

Dr. Mir does not do X-Rays in her office. She does a throughout history and physical assessment which includes orthopedic testing, and from this she can create her diagnosis to treat. If she thinks you need an X-Ray she will send you back to your GP to get it through the medical route.

  1. Chiropractors aren’t thorough

Dr. Mir spends 1 hour in the initial visit to ensure she has the time to wrap her mind around your injuries and properly diagnose your presenting musculoskeletal problems. In that initial visit she also treats if time permits. Subsequent treatments are typically 30 min bookings and include modalities, soft tissue treatment and spinal manipulations or mobilizations.
