How many CrossFitters does it take to change a light bulb?

Three: one to do it in record time, one to film it, and one to complain about proper form. All jokes aside, being a stickler about proper form is key in preventing injuries–especially when performing high-intensity, functional movements.

Common Injuries in CrossFitters and Skiers

CrossFit and skiing are both sports that target your large muscle groups, cardiovascular system, flexibility, balance, and coordination. They require you to use your entire body, which unfortunately can lead to a wide range of injuries. Some of the most common injuries include:

  • Tendonitis
    • With all of the heavy lifting, bending, stretching, and turning involved in these sports, the joints undergo a lot of repetitive movements. This commonly results in tendonitis in the shoulders, elbows, knees, and ankles.
  • Shoulder sprains, fractures, and dislocations
    • Given its nature of being a ball-and-socket joint, the shoulder is at high risk for injury. One wrong movement or fall can be detrimental to this highly mobile joint.
  • Ligament tears in the knee
    • Your knee joint has several ligaments that all serve to keep your knees functioning properly. The explosive nature of CrossFit and skiing puts a lot of pressure on these ligaments, and often they simply cannot keep up.
  • Wrist pain and fractures
    • There are a lot of snap-focused movements in CrossFit, and a lot of falls in skiing. In either case, you are placing a lot of trust in your wrists to remain stable and strong. Poor movement and overuse will decrease the likelihood that your wrists will hold up under pressure.
  • Low back pain and strain
    • When performing high-intensity, functional movements, your lower back muscles and abdominal muscles are recruited constantly. If your muscles aren’t conditioned properly for such a high demand, it is likely that you will strain your back.

It is great that you want to be active and participate in such physically demanding activities. The more information you have about these injuries and why they happen so often, the better equipped you will be to protect your body from unnecessary pain.

Why Chiropractic Care is a Good Idea for CrossFitters and Skiers

To be successful in CrossFit or skiing, you need to have a healthy range of mobility. This requires aligned joints and elasticity in your muscles. If you are in pain, it is most likely because your body is literally out of alignment. Your chiropractor can perform a series of spinal adjustments to get your body back moving the way that it is designed to.

Chiropractic care may actually increase your overall performance by giving you better range of motion and even improving your balance. Chiropractors can help your body stay aligned and flexible to reduce your chance of injury. Anyone involved in a high-intensity, high-impact exercise routine should be under the care of a chiropractor, both for soft tissue and manual therapies. While these services are a form of treatment, they are also preventive measures of injuries as well.

Just by engaging in these high-intensity sports, you’re already proving how committed you are to keeping your body healthy and fit. Take it a step further by connecting with a chiropractor in your area to address any current issues and find out how to keep your future self healthy so you can keep doing what you love.
